Philly to Key West Bike Tour 2014

In 2014 Sept to October, my son an I rode our bicycles from Bellmawr NJ to Key West. It was an adventure we both needed. Neither one of us ever did a bike ride like this and not much in preparation. As a matter of fact we way overpacked and ended up mailing pounds of clothes and equipment back. We stayed in KOA's, cheap motels, a couple of state campgrounds and a couple of Warmshowers host, which were the kindest people ever!!! I need to get my house together so I can start hosting again. My bike of choice was the Trek 520 and Shaun had the Surly Long Haul Trucker. We both only experienced one flat tire each. Shaun's bike had the Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires 26x1.75 and my bike had the Bontragger hardcase 700x32. No complaints. Overall we had a great time. I would like to do it again soon but with much less baggage. Maybe pack super light and credit card it. The winds mostly blow south to north so since I live in Florida now I just may give it a try again. The east coast is a great way to experience a first bicycle tour since it is mostly flat. I do suggest getting the ACA bicycle touring maps and following their directions. We attempted the East Coast Greenway in some parts, google maps in others and I do think the ACA maps would be the best choice. We guessed the entire way on where to stay where the ACA maps gives you a heads up on the best places to stay ahead of time. But if you like adventure and don't care what the day brings...wing it!
