New Years Eve in New York City!! This by far had to be the best New Years Eve of my life. What a way to ring in 2016!
Shaun flew into Florida for Christmas. After that we took a roadtrip to Philly on a whim. I almost backed out and Shaun said what the hell do we have to lose. So true! We pulled into Aunt Marge's and plopped our bags there. The next day we visited the Logan Hotel in downtown Philly. They were carrying our hot sauce at the time. They gave us some free chicken wings with the hot sauce and I was really surprised how good it was. As of this writing they no longer have it. I'm sure it is due to cost. Restaurants live on pennies and it is way too expensive to have made and sell wholesale to restaurants. Have to find another way if I want to do that. But to be honest I'm out of the food business now. I'm enjoying being retired way too much! So anyway it was a great experience at the time which helped make the trip so magical.
I had called my friend Sister Angie to see if we can park the car at her convent in Manhattan. Sister Angie said of course. So off we went at 5am in the morning and drove up to NYC for New Years Eve. When we got to Sister Angie's she was standing in the middle of the street directing us where to park. We parked in front of the NYC Police Dept Sub Station. A couple of cops had a spot blocked off for us. How about that free parking in downtown Manhattan in front of the NYC Police Dept! We thought could this get any better? Sister Angie showed us around her convent then we went out for some authentic New York Pizza. Shaun fell in love with the food. The crazy thing was he walked around the city like he owned it. You know me I can't get myself out of a wet paper bag. Not Shaun, he just seemed to know how to get around. Great travel buddy to have!
After we said bye to Sister Angie we walked to 42nd Street. Reminds me of the musical, I couldn't get the song out of my head. We stopped at the Hard Rock Cafe for our first celebratory drink and could not believe we were spending New Years Eve in NYC. It was around 2pm now so we figure we better find the line so we can get into the pen. The pen is where the police blocks off streets and gates the crowd into one spot until the ball drops at midnight. Once you are in the pen you cannot leave to go to the bathroom or get anything to eat. So you are stuck there from 2pm until midnight in the weather. We made our way inside a pen. I met a couple from Boston who told me about Applebees selling tickets for their New Years Eve Party at $375 per person. All you can eat buffet and drink with a DJ on all 3 floors. Shaun was looking around and I can tell he was not liking this and neither was I. Applebees just happened to be down the street from where we were. Shaun said lets get out of here and take our chances on seeing the ball. Lets walk around. I said ok. So off we went but first I said lets stop by Applebee's for a second. We went in and I asked the guy at the door if they had anymore New Years Eve Party tickets available. He said yes. I'll take two. I thought Shaun was going to faint. I figure why not...what an experience to have at this moment. It just added to the magic. The party started at 7pm. In the meantime we walked around and saw the sights and had a couple of drinks.
We went back to Applebee's at 7pm and the party was on. All I can say is we had the time of our lives. Well I actually had the time of my life watching Shaun have the time of his life. Big fun!
You can get the gist of it by the video.
I drove us back to Aunt Marge's at 5am and slept the entire day. We missed the mummers parade we were so tired. I suppose you can't do both. Next time Mummers parade.
Jan 2nd we headed out and drove to Washington DC to meet up with Shaun's cousin Jordan. Nice kid. We spent the day wandering aimlessly around D.C. Just more fun. We said our good byes to Jordan then headed back to Florida. That was the beginning of 2016. What a great start.
